How I Got Here - Jade Swain-Veneziale

I first started attending my local children’s centre when I became a mum in April 2015. I had health complications following the birth of my daughter, and because I have no family close by and at the time I was in an unstable marriage, I felt very unsupported and isolated. I was desperate for somewhere to go where I could find advice, support and comfort and where I could also feel safe.

After some trepidation I started to attend Grange Park Children’s Centre and slowly started to integrate myself into classes and groups. This led to me taking part in educational programmes funded by Better Start, and I also volunteered for community parent groups that co-produce Better Start programmes and services. I also represent the community’s voice in developing Better Start’s strategy of engaging and helping local parents.

Inspired to volunteer

My decision to volunteer for Blackpool Better Start was a defining moment in my life. Not only did it improve my knowledge of early years and child development, but it also helped me build my confidence and gave me a greater understanding of how much parents can gain from support in their community.
