
Strong role model
My mum brought up me and my sister alone after my dad passed away when I was 10. My mum was a wonderful role model for us growing up. Her strong work ethic and approach to life and learning has been a major influence on me.
At my earliest opportunity – aged 15 – I got a Saturday job. I worked for a bakery, in their shops around Liverpool. I had to get up very early to catch up to three buses! This taught me the discipline of time management and being organised.
Right advice, right time
As I was preparing to leave school, I considered two options: to take on the full-time job I’d been offered in the bakery or do A-levels. If the latter, I wanted to study drama, as I was interested in a career in the performing arts. I found myself leaning towards the job as I wanted to be financially independent. But I also knew I wanted to keep on learning.
