Project Cornwall’s Children in Care Education Support Service

Funding Around £500,000 a year – about two thirds from the dedicated schools grant and the rest from Cornwall County Council’s children, schools and families department

Purpose To support children in care, their schools and carers to ensure looked-after young people get the most out of school

Background The government and local authorities have long sought to narrow the gap in educational achievement between looked-after children and their peers.

Establishing a “virtual school” with a head teacher, as proposed in the 2007 Care Matters white paper, was seen as one way of tracking progress, improving services and keeping focus on looked-after children’s education.
