Legal Update: In a Nutshell - Education of children in care

From next April, the pupil premium plus will ensure children in care attract a higher rate of funding to support their education.

What support is provided for the education of children in care?

The government is increasing the funding available to schools to support the education of children in care through the pupil premium plus. In the Children and Families Bill, which is currently going through parliament, the government is also planning to make it a legal requirement for each local authority to have a "virtual school head" to promote the education of children in care. This is intended to address the disparity in educational outcomes of children in care, compared to other children: according to government statistics, only 15 per cent of children in care received five A* to C GCSEs or equivalent in 2012, compared with 58 per cent of non-looked after children. Children in care are also four times more likely to be excluded than other children.
