Hot Issue: Does the term 'offending' put teenagers off fromactivities?

3 mins read

YES - Des Morrison, head of service, Derby City Youth Offending Service

We already do something similar to Durham in that we don't use the term offending in our preventative work, recognising the need to remain sensitive and responsive to a broad group of vulnerable young people, many of whom are not offenders. I wouldn't be in favour of changing the name of the service to delete reference to offending because you can do the same work without changing the name.

What remains key is carefully targeting young people. Most projects usually have their own names, under the umbrella of Positive Activities for Young People, so use that to promote the preventative side of the work they do.
