Youth justice: Durham drops use of term 'offending'

1 min read

Christina Blythe, head of the service, said the new name will better reflect its work and help it to deliver crime preventative measures easier.

"The term 'offending' has been a blocker on our preventative agenda," she said.

"Parents would say to their children that they couldn't come here because they would mix with young offenders. Young people themselves, both offenders and non-offenders, were also put off from coming to activities."

The service runs a number of preventative projects, including Positive Activities for Young People, Positive Futures and four youth inclusion panels.

It also leads the area's intensive supervision and surveillance programme, which is a community-based punishment for persistent young offenders.
