OPINION: Hot Issue - Should Margaret Hodge take on the youth crimeportfolio?

Over the past two years there's been a lot of progress at local level in joint planning and commissioning of services for children and young people.

Local authorities had developed a strategic framework of services originated by the Children and Young People's Unit, which has brought together all the agencies for children's services.

The preventative strategy and children's trusts have been part of it.

Looking at strategies to prevent crime and dealing with young offenders have been central to discussions. All of this had included work on crime prevention. To separate off children who are entangled in the youth justice system from all other children's services won't work. To me it makes no sense to separate youth justice issues from strategies and services for all children and young people at local level or at central government level.
