Hop for Health: Kent schools use active play to boost HealthySchools

Children at St Crispin's Infant School in Kent take part in lunchtime games and activities as part of an initiative to promote active play.

Activities are led by six- and seven-year-old play leaders elected by classmates at the beginning of each term and trained by school staff. "Active play has made a huge difference," says head teacher Margaret Kehoe. "As well as the obvious benefits of physical activity, the games and activities are designed to encourage participation, team work and respect." Kent now has 306 schools with Healthy School status and part of the Thanet area has become the first in the county where all schools have achieved healthy schools status. By 2009 the council expects all schools to be working towards the status.
