Holiday activities: Fun in the sun

For urban children, outdoor play schemes are a much-needed outlet for their energies. Daniel Martin examines their benefits.

During the summer holidays, Sharme from Streatham in south London is unable to play out very often. "I live near a busy road, and it's a bit dangerous sometimes," explains the eight-year-old. So, when school is out, she is lucky to have Trojans, an outdoor play group that takes young children on trips further afield.

She fondly remembers a day in Greenwich - not far in terms of distance maybe, but a world away in terms of space. "We had a look at the museum," she recalls, "but the best bit was when we went outside to play in the sun. We got skipping ropes and there were lots of parks. We were playing around on the grass and there was loads of space to run around in.
