To the Department for Education and Skills:

As a borough-wide play council we would like to raise with you concernsabout the future of Ofsted-registered holiday play schemes inRochdale.

Radpac is a voluntary organisation that funds, supports and develops avariety of play and childcare opportunities for five- to 12-year-olds,including voluntary and community sector play schemes.

In 1994, we had 25 such schemes. Today we have three Ofsted-registeredfacilities and six unregistered.

The three registered schemes run on a sessional basis, that is threeweeks during the summer and the Easter period. These schemes don't runat any other time of year.

One community centre-based scheme is struggling to meet the requirementof having a manager and deputy play worker with NVQ Level 3 on duty atall times. The scheme does have two volunteers with Level 3qualifications, but neither of them wishes to take on the leadresponsibility.
