Inspections: Play scheme says standards 'unfair'

A play scheme provider in the north of England has claimed that standards imposed on holiday play schemes are too stringent and "unfair" after education watchdog Ofsted threatened to close them down.

Two play schemes in Rochdale, which cater for hundreds of children inthe school holidays, look set to close after Ofsted said they had failedto meet the required standards for a holiday play scheme. Ofstedrequires holiday play schemes to have a manager and deputy manager withan NVQ Level 3 qualification.

Helen Duncan, manager of Rochdale and District Play Action Council'said: "Both these play schemes are run by volunteers who want to helpout in their community. We think Ofsted should look at volunteers'experience, their knowledge of playwork and whether they are CriminalRecords Bureau checked and have health and safety training."

However Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, has backedOfsted's ruling.
