These days it exists to support children and agencies such as social services that need help to meet children's needs.
Its work falls into three areas: child support grants to provide children with necessities at times of crisis; school fees grants to allow children with problems at home to attend boarding school when this is the only answer; and grants for student and trainee young people.
The trust lobbies government on children's policy, and supports research into children's needs, commissioning the By Degrees study into care leavers who entered higher education (Children Now, 25-31 May).
