What is it? Set up in the 1930s by social visionary Frank Buttle, Buttle UK offers grants to help vulnerable children aged 11 and over gain more support at school and ensure they have the best opportunity to succeed in education. As well as providing funding for school fees, the charity has a range of other funding programmes. These include financial assistance to help hard-to-reach 18- to 25-year-olds get back into employment, education or training, awards to help 16- to 20-year-olds with severe social problems to access education or training and a small grants programme to cover the cost of essential items for families in need.
How much is on offer? Funding is decided on a case-by-case basis. Applicants for the school fees programme are required to already have chosen a school and to provide professional supporting statements to show that the needs of the child or young person meet Buttle UK’s criteria. Before awarding a grant the charity must be satisfied that the facilities of the chosen school meet the requirements of the pupil and that the level of fees can realistically be met.
What will it fund? Those eligible to apply for funding from the charity are adopted children and young people; those being cared for by grandparents, other relatives or friends; those from single-parent families; and those with two carers but where one is suffering from an illness or disability.
When is the deadline? Applications for funding are accepted throughout the year.
