Help From: Lost for Words

Lost for Words has grown out of a joint research project carried out in the early 1990s looking into teachers' training in child bereavement.

Dove House Hospice in Hull and the then Humberside LEA found teachers did not have the skills to respond to children's needs. In a follow-up study, Dr John Holland of Hull City Council's city psychological service found that children needed more support.

Starting with an awareness-raising leaflet, the project has developed resources including a training package, published in 2000, and also runs courses for professionals across the children's services sector.

Lost for Words now offers help with other losses that children encounter, including life-threatening illnesses or being in public care. It has also held two conferences that have attracted overseas speakers.
