Health: Wales - Specialist mental health unit planned

More young people in north Wales will be able to receive specialist mental health care closer to home under plans to build an 18-bed unit.

The facility will replace a 10-bed child and adolescent mental health(CAMHS) unit and include a five-bed emergency and high dependencyward.

Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, the new facility at Abergelewill also mean young people can be admitted to local age-appropriatefacilities during the weekend for the first time, as current provisionis only available during the week.

The unit, due to open in late 2009, will also support childrenexperiencing problems such as eating disorders and self-harm.

Dr Clare Lamb, clinical lead for specialist CAMHS at Conwy andDenbighshire NHS Trust, said: "This will enable us to create a 'centreof excellence' that will provide a modern, safe and effectiveservice."
