Health: Mental health - Specialist unit for offenders planned

The Youth Justice Board is to open its first specialist unit for young people in custody with severe mental health problems, Children Now has learned.

Around 48 young people under 18 will be able to use the unit at WetherbyYoung Offender Institution in Yorkshire which is set to open in2008.

Graham Robb, interim chair of the Youth Justice Board, said the boardwas trying to cater for young people's needs while in custody: "It willbe a new build, with a new design and new principles behind it. Werecognise some youngsters in existing custody need more intensivetherapeutic communities and treatments; their behaviour can be sodemanding that it is better to provide this in specialistfacilities."
