Youth Justice Board opens special unit in Yorkshire

Youth Justice
The Youth Justice Board (YJB) has opened a unit in Yorkshire for young offenders with emotional problems or who are the victims of bullying in mainstream young offender institutions (YOIs).

The Keppel Unit is based at the Wetherby YOI in West Yorkshire and will take up to 48 boys who are emotionally or physically immature, at risk of bullying or who withdraw from standard YOI activities.

Those that are attending are aged between 15 and 17 and are mostly from the north of England and the West Midlands, although the unit is expected to cater for young people from across England.

YJB chief executive John Drew said: "Through targeted support, this new unit is helping those young people who might otherwise struggle while in custody to better understand the reasons behind their offending and get the help they need to move their lives forward in a positive way."
