Health services: Best of health

5 mins read
The Parallel centre in Bolton was singled out for praise in the Youth Matters green paper. Barbara Oaff discovers what makes it unique and how its approach could revolutionise health provision for young people in England.

Established in 2003, The Parallel is commonly described as a youth health centre with a difference. "There is nothing else like it," says Margaret Clugston, co-ordinator at the centre.

"What we do is unique."

On most weekdays, dozens of teenagers call into the centre after school to get all manner of information and advice on topics ranging from general physical health to emotional, mental and sexual issues.

"Most places just cover one or two of these areas," says Clugston. "But here they are all offered." Doctors, nurses and counsellors are available on Saturdays and on four weekdays from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. The Parallel also has specialist advisers, who deliver programmes in areas such as underage pregnancy and substance misuse.
