Very sick children often have to travel a long way for specialist care. But a partnership led by Great Ormond Street Hospital is changing this, reveals Helen Gilbert.

When you are unwell the last thing you want to do is travel, but formany very sick children with cancer or HIV there is no choice. Thenature of their illnesses can require multiple trips to specialisthospitals, often miles away from home, which can eventually take a tollon their health, education and day-to-day lives. But things arebeginning to change in north London, thanks to the Children and YoungPeople's Partnership for Health.

The partnership, led by Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), includesNorth Middlesex University Hospital, the Whittington Hospital andHaringey Teaching Primary Care Trust. It aims to share expertise andjoin up tertiary, secondary and primary care services in order to treatchildren closer to their homes and limit disruption to school and familylife.
