Health News: Primary care nurses - Regulators discuss prescribingpower

Healthcare regulators are to meet to discuss concerns that nurses are not required to have a separate qualification for prescribing to children.

The move follows a meeting of the Nursing Midwifery Council during whichcouncil members warned that allowing primary care nurses withoutspecialist qualifications to prescribe medicines for children could poserisks to safety.

However, a council spokeswoman said that since 85 per cent of primarycare nurses' consultations are with children it was unrealistic toprevent them from prescribing to the group.
