The number of school nurses in Welsh schools may need to be doubled to address chronic shortages, campaigners have warned.
At the launch of the all-party group on nursing and midwifery at the Welsh Assembly last week, Karen Healey, head of children's nursing services at Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust, backed calls from the Royal College of Nursing for every comprehensive school in Wales to have its own school nurse within five years.
Following the results of a mapping exercise by the University of Swansea, Healey said Wales's 200 school nurses each worked with 2,000 to 4,000 pupils, covering 10 to 13 schools, despite recommendations that they should only be responsible for five.
