Researchers, who identified eight aspects of early life linked to obesity, found young children sleeping for less than 10-and-a-half hours a night were more likely to become obese by the age of seven than children who slept more than 12 hours.
Authors said the increase could be due to the release of growth hormones during sleep that affect the build-up of muscle tissue, or those who were more physically active may sleep longer at night.
