Nutritionist Frankie Phillips of the British Nutrition Foundation was disappointed that the Food Standard Agency's Action Plan had not used the obesity debate as an opportunity to tackle poor intake of minerals in children, particularly of calcium in teenage girls and iron in young children.
She also said the plan focused on total fat consumption rather than targeting saturated fats.
The FSA said it would develop guidelines for schools, including a healthy approach to school vending and healthy options at meal times, and work with broadcast media regulator Ofcom to review TV advertising codes on children's exposure to food advertising.
