HEALTH NEWS: Nutrition - Coca-Cola bows to branding pressure

1 min read
Coca-Cola is to offer non-branded vending machines to all schools in England and Wales following concerns that advertising can encourage poor nutrition among children.

The move comes as Scottish food and health tsar Gillian Kynoch hammered out a deal with the drinks giant to replace its logo on drinks machines with a picture of an urban street scene and ensure that water and still juice drinks were also provided.

Coca-Cola said all new vending machine placements in England and Wales incorporated the non-branded version. "We are also providing this option to local authorities and individual schools that request it," it added.

The DfES said it would not follow the Scottish example by entering into any formal agreement. "This is a matter for schools and local education authorities," said a spokeswoman.
