London's neo-natal units are already under immense pressure; lack ofcapacity means many babies born early have to be cared for far away fromhome. However, despite the capital gaining an extra 77 cots between 2002and 2006, cots at several units cannot be used because of lack of moneyfor staff, a report from the London Assembly found.
Joanne McCartney, chair of the assembly's Health and Public ServicesCommittee, pointed out that Government money was responsible for extracots, as well as networks for co-ordinating services.
But the Labour assembly member added: "These extra cots will only helpreduce capacity problems if they are accompanied by an investment instaffing."
