Health: Manchester maternity service revamp

1 min read Health
Maternity and neo-natal services across 10 Greater Manchester primary care trusts (PCTs) are undergoing a major overhaul.

Work has started on restructuring the departments following seven years of planning and consultation.

The aim of the new structure is to provide services closer to home for children and make sure appointments are either at local hospitals or at home.

Specialist health staff will be concentrated in a number of centres of excellence, which will contain children's, neo-natal and maternity units.

The areas involved are Ashton, Leigh and Wigan; Bolton; Bury; Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale; Manchester; Oldham; Salford; Stockport; Tameside and Glossop and Trafford.

The redevelopment, called Making it Better, was sparked by a group of paediatricians in Greater Manchester who said the services they were providing were not sustainable or good quality. They felt they could redesign the service.
