Health News: Neo-natal Care - Training would cut nurse shortages

Boosting exposure to neo-natal care in nurses' pre-registrationtraining could help address severe shortages in the sector, according toprofessionals.

It follows research by premature baby charity Bliss that found almostthree quarters of the units caring for premature and sick babies refusednew admissions in the last six months. Many of the units could not admitbabies because they lacked nurses.

Researchers surveyed 153 units and found that 2,500 more nurses wereneeded to bring the system up to British Association of PerinatalMedicine standards.

Fiona Smith, children and young people's advisor at the Royal College ofNursing, said research had found nurses exposed to neonatal care gainedinterest in working in the field. However, in many areas, nurses werenot exposed to it, she said.
