Health News: Immunisation

TB jabs increase as infections soar Health chiefs are to double the number of babies immunised against tuberculosis in Greenwich after incidents rose by a quarter in a year.

Tuberculosis can be potentially fatal in young children who can catchthe infection through prolonged exposure to someone infected.

In 2004, 91 people contracted the infection compared with 73 in2003.

Experts blame the rise on increased migration to the borough and soaringbirth rates.

Ethnic minority children, who are most at risk from the infection, willbe targeted with BCG vaccines, swelling the number of vaccinesadministered to newborns from 1,000 per year to more than 2,000.
