Health News: Health visitors - Reluctance to deal with special needs

Health visitors are reluctant to visit families with children who have special needs, according to a leading health visitor.

Paula Roper-Hall chairs the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association special interest group for children with special needs, and is a health visitor for Richmond and Twickenham PCT.

At the Primary Care 2004 conference last week she told Children Now that visitors had a "fear of what to say" because they felt families knew more about the child's condition. She added: "They feel they have nothing to offer."

But Roper-Hall said the visit was "about giving information about special needs generally rather than advising on particular conditions".
