Health News: Mental health - Call for skill update for healthvisitors

Health visitor and school nurse training is not equipping nurses to meet children's mental health needs, according to the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association.

The association is preparing recommendations to press the Nursing &Midwifery Council to update training after research by Cheryll Adams, the association's professional officer for research and practicedevelopment.

Adams, who carried out a literature review and surveyed 2,500 members'said most pre-registration health visitor training was on post-nataldepression and attachment - leaving out social support andself-esteem.

She said: "When you look at the council's guidance for health visitorsand school nurses there's very little mention of mental health. Buthealth visitors agree they work with families' mental health issuesevery day."
