'Dumb down' fears for health visiting

1 min read Careers Health
Health visiting is at risk of being dumbed down by plans to change the way professionals register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), a union has warned.

Health union Unite fears the expertise of specialist community public health nurses, such as health visitors or school nurses, could be compromised with their roles lumped together with nurses and midwives.

Current rules state that to become a health visitor, professionals must be registered as a nurse or midwife. Under a ruling made by the NMC in 2005, once registered as a health visitor, professionals do not then have to re-register as a nurse or midwife.

But at a meeting this week (6 December), the NMC's council will discuss whether to reverse the 2005 decision and require anyone registered as a specialist community public health nurse to re-register every three years as a nurse or midwife.
