Health News: Epilepsy - Course launched to cover the basics

A course to help professionals who work with epileptic children begins this week.

The course has been developed by the British Paediatric NeurologyAssociation, which is affiliated to the Royal College of Paediatrics andChild Health.

It comes in response to government concern over the lack of educationfor professionals on the issue.

Dr Geoff Lawson, course tutor consultant paediatrician at SunderlandRoyal Hospital where the course is based, said the one-day course wasaimed at professionals from social workers to those who worked withdisability allowance schemes.

He explained it covers the "basics of epilepsy", including theside-effects of medicines, how to tell the difference between epilepsyand fainting, and behavioural problems often connected with thecondition.

Two parallel courses will run for paediatricians who have a specialinterest in epilepsy, and for expert neurologists.
