Health News: Primary care - Children to choose paediatrician

Children will join professionals from social care, education and primary care in helping to appoint a paediatrician in north Cumbria.

West Cumberland Hospital has copied the idea from Cumbria CountyCouncil, which used a mix of children and professionals to help appointits director of children's services.

Dr Deborah Lee, consultant paediatrician and associate medical directorfor children's services at North Cumbria Acute Hospital Trust, said itwas important for paediatricians to be able to work with staff fromacross a range of services.

"We don't just work within the hospital. It's important to haveawareness of other disciplines," she said.

The two children and professionals will advise the trust's appointmentpanel, highlighting what they feel to be each candidate's strengths andweaknesses. They will also provide an overall rating.
