Health News: Disability - Girl denied chance to hear in both ears

A young girl denied an operation to enable her to hear in both ears has sparked a row about the postcode lottery for bi-lateral implants for children.

Specialists at Manchester Royal Infirmary told Alia and Nazir Kashiftheir daughter Aminah would benefit from having cochlear implants fittedin both ears. However, because NHS guidelines do not cover the fittingof two implants, Manchester Primary Care Trust has refused to foot thebill.

Instead, the trust promised to pay to fit the second implant as part ofthe scheduled operation in April if the Kashifs pay 10,000 forthe implant themselves.

The Kashifs fear the delay could severely affect Aminah's developmentand have asked their MP Gerald Kaufman to challenge the decision.

A National Deaf Children's Society spokesman said: "Some children do geta second implant. It comes down to the financial bottom line ofdifferent primary care trusts."
