Sexual Health: Chance blown to stem rise in STIs

The Government has missed a "golden opportunity" to stop the increase in sexually transmitted infections in young people by excluding sexual health services from NHS targets, a sexual health charity has claimed.

Anne Weyman, chief executive of fpa, who was speaking before an expected announcement of a further rise in the incidence of STIs, said that without measurable targets to reduce waiting times, primary care trusts would prioritise other services.

The Health Protection Agency was due to announce the rates of STIs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Tuesday, after Children Now went to press.

A spokesman for the agency said that the figures would reflect trends in recent years, where the rate of increase had fallen, but added that there had been an overall rise.
