Health News: Sexual health - Charities defend pregnancy strategy

The virtual standstill in teenage pregnancy rates does not mean the Government's strategy is not working say sexual health groups.

The latest Government figures show the rate of teenage pregnancy inEngland has fallen very slightly from 41.5 conceptions per thousandgirls aged 15- to 17-years-old in 2004 to 41.1 in 2005.

There was also a four per cent rise in pregnancies among under-16s, anincrease of 302 conceptions to 7,917.

But significant drops have occurred since figures for the strategy werefirst collected in 1998.

Anne Weyman, chief executive of fpa, said: "The dramatic reduction inteenage pregnancy in some parts of the country demonstrates that thestrategy can make a tremendous difference."
