Health News: Sexual health - Embarrassment is still barrier to help

A national campaign including mock sex clinics in schools has been called for after research showed a third of young women and two-fifths of young men were too embarrassed to seek help on sexual health.

Experts called on the Government to make closer links between sexual health services and education after the findings by the health-education charity Developing Patient Partnerships.

The charity found that knowing what to expect from a visit to a clinic would encourage almost four-fifths of 16- to 24-year-olds to seek help.

Its new Sussed on Sex campaign aims to raise awareness of the help available.

Anna Martinez, co-ordinator of the Sex Education Forum, said: "A campaign including mock clinics in schools would help dispel fear of the unexpected." Anne Weyman, fpa chief executive, said government targets to reduce waiting times for contraceptive services would also encourage young people to access services.
