The young women's unit at HMP Cookham Wood is frankly unremarkable.
It's your standard modern architectural fare with 17 bedrooms, asmattering of classrooms and the odd office. For 17-year-old Jodie,though, it could be the most beautiful building in the world. This isbecause Jodie doesn't see red bricks and fire-exit doors, but a haven ofsafety, routine and tranquility, which have been scarce qualities in herlife so far.
It is hardly surprising. Shortly before her arrest, Jodie had to cutdown her mum after she tried hanging herself at home. Finding the traumaall too much, Jodie ended up going on a drugs binge and her subsequentoffence was not unrelated.
