Shanice is feeling depressed. Her dad was sent to prison for seven years for raping her cousin. She visits him every Sunday but she cannot say she still loves him. She wants to ask her dad if there might be support available at the prison for her.
Unfortunately, Shanice's experience, which she told to a ChildLine counsellor, is not uncommon. According to the Home Office's 2004 Reducing Re-offending Action Plan, around 150,000 children are affected by a parent's imprisonment every year. Approximately 55 per cent of female prisoners have children under the age of 16 and one third have a child under five.
