HEALTH NEWS: Diet - Wall's cuts fat in ice-cream brands

Nutritionists have welcomed the news that Wall's is launching low-fat versions of some of its best selling ice-cream products.

Toni Steer, a nutritionist at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, said any step by the food industry to reduce fat, salt and sugar was good news.

However, she added: "I would be concerned if the fat were replaced by extra sugar."

Wall's would not confirm the sugar levels in the new ice-creams but claimed their calorie content would be a third lower.

The new Magnum will contain 11.7 per cent fat, compared with the current 17 per cent.

The healthier Carte d'Or will be 2.5 per cent fat, half that of the existing product.

However, Steer warned the move should not encourage children to eat more ice-cream.
