Opinion: Debate - Should ice cream vans be banned outside schools?

1 min read
Under an amendment to the Education and Inspections Bill, local authorities could be given new powers to stop ice cream vans from operating near school gates. But some say the treat does not pose a threat to children's health

NO - Mark Gossage, director, Ice Cream Alliance

Of course not. Why?

As a society we often don't ban things that are proven to be harmful sohow can anyone consider banning ice cream? I won't pretend that it's ahealth food although it is a good source of calcium and vitamins A and Dand is a regular item on school and hospital menus. But it is a treatand perfectly fine as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Most of all, children love ice cream. To deprive them of this simple pleasure seemsto deny them another part of childhood.

YES - Bill McGregor, general secretary, Headteachers' AssociationScotland
