Health News: Childhood obesity - Authorities offered specialist training

A programme working with obese children and staffed by non-health professionals plans to offer training to health authorities in its approach.

The Watch It programme, led by Professor Mary Rudolph, a consultant paediatrician in community child health at the Leeds Community and Mental Health Trust, was developed in response to the lack of access to dietetic services for obese children in the city.

Funded by Leeds Health Action Zone, it trains community workers who receive ongoing supervision from a clinical team.

They see families on a weekly basis and work closely with sports coaches and centres.

Carolyn Wellings, the programme's team leader, said it aimed to train cohorts from seven primary care trusts.

She claimed a major reason for the programme's success was the fact that staff were selected on the basis of their ability to relate to and communicate with obese children.
