Childhood obesity: Health authorities' progress checks suspended until2006/07

1 min read
Health authorities will not be required to measure the incidence of childhood obesity in their areas until 2006/07, three years before they have to meet national targets in 2010, the Department of Health has admitted.

The news has dismayed campaigners on childhood obesity, who believe it make it more difficult for local trusts to know whether their anti-obesity measures are working or not.

The news follows a report from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) revealing the Government feels it is "too early to make an assessment" as to how progress will be measured.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Health said that local targets on childhood obesity had been "deferred".

However, she said it expected strategic health authorities and primary care trusts to be in a position to track obesity prevalence by 2006/07.

The delay was to "allow the policy and systems development work on childhood obesity monitoring" to be worked out with the DfES, she added.
