1 min read
Wales will meet child obesity targets, its education minister promised following the launch of a five-year plan to improve children's health and fitness.

The news contrasts with growing scepticism among officials over whetherthe UK-wide target to halt the rise in child obesity by 2010 can be met(Children Now, 17-23 May).

The plan was launched alongside proposals on school food standards byFirst Minister Rhodri Morgan last week.

Under the plan, free healthy school breakfasts will be available to allprimary school children by January 2007. The range of exercise availablefor boys and girls will also be increased since all maintained schoolswill receive advice for teaching staff on health-related activities suchas gymnastics by 2010. And Sure Start and youth workers will be able toaccess training on children's health through a new course on communitynutrition designed to be led by local dieticians.
