HEALTH NEWS: Obesity - Health coalition in call for obesity tsar

A Cabinet minister should be put in charge of tackling Britain's obesity crisis, according to a coalition of health experts and voluntary organisations.

The group, which includes Diabetes UK and the NCB, called for action by government departments, inspection agencies, local authorities, schools and industry.

It presented a raft of recommendations to children's minister Margaret Hodge, public health minister Melanie Johnson and culture secretary Tessa Jowell at a Commons Health Select Committee meeting last week.

It suggested annual monitoring of a sample of children for diet, activity and body size, and restrictions on the marketing of junk food and drink to children.

The recommendations follow a public debate on child obesity held by the Food Standards Agency last week.
