Health news: Child deaths - Infant mortality lowest in N Ireland

Northern Ireland had the lowest infant mortality rate in the UK in 2002 and Scotland had the highest, according to the Office for National Statistics.

There were 4.7 deaths per 1,000 live births in Northern Ireland, compared to 5.3 per 1,000 in Scotland.

Infant deaths fell in England and Wales, from 5.4 per 1,000 in 2001 to 5.2 per 1,000 in 2002.

And there was the same rate among children aged between one and 14 years, at 15 deaths per 100,000 children.

The ONS refused to speculate on the reasons for the variance.
