Health: Epilepsy - Reforms threaten care, warn MPs

NHS reforms are jeopardising children with epilepsy by preventing a smooth transition from paediatric to adult care.

Evidence in a report by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Epilepsysays the Government's payment by results policy means some primary caretrusts are barring referrals between consultants. As a result, directhand-over from paediatric to adult neurology services is beingthreatened.

The group also found that the NHS has reneged on its commitment toprovide specialist nurses for children with epilepsy (Children Now,16-22 May).

The report calls for a doubling of paediatric neurologists from 75 to150. The report also calls for epilepsy to be categorised as aneducational disorder to help sufferers access support.
