Health: Drug misusers put family life at risk

1 min read Health
Half of families with children receiving treatment for drug and alcohol problems have suffered a family breakdown.

The stark finding is contained in a study carried out by Addaction and published last week.

The drug and alcohol charity undertook a snapshot survey of under-19s and their families during its Youngaddaction Plus pilot programme, which has projects based in Liverpool, Halton in Cheshire, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall and Lincoln. It found the types of family breakdown included divorce, separation, children leaving home or being put into care.

Reasons for breakdowns included needing to leave an area because of pressure from drug dealers, children wanting to live independently or a parent's refusal to tolerate the young person's behaviour.

John Cook, programme manager of Youngaddaction Plus, said that even though the charity knew there was a major issue surrounding family breakdown, the results were still surprising.
