Drug services urged to identify children at risk

Professionals treating adults with drug and alcohol problems must play a greater role in identifying children suffering abuse or neglect, according to new government guidance.

The guidance, issued by the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA) and the Department for Education, states that those responsible for drink and drug treatment must take a wider, more preventative approach to protect children.

This includes considering whether an adult being treated is a potential risk to children and how to identify, assess, refer, support and treat adults with the aim of protecting any children involved.

The previous government and the NTA produced the first guidance only 18 months ago but many areas are yet to implement the recommendations.

Rosanna O'Connor, director of delivery for the NTA, said that around a quarter of areas do not have clear processes in place for joint working between drug and alcohol partnerships and children and family services.
