A survey by the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) found one in three teachers wants to become a head teacher, suggesting the retirement of thousands will not be as problematic as initially thought.
Chris Kirk, director of succession planning at the NCSL, said the findings suggest a crisis can be adverted. "Around 3,500 head teachers are due to retire in 2009 and similar numbers are to retire in the years around that," he said.
"It presents a real challenge for schools and it is vital we find new school leaders. The finding that a third of teachers want to become heads is good news and gives us a huge pool of potential replacements. The challenge for the NCSL now is to build on teachers' aspirations."
